Driver Education Courses

All four Police Forces in Wales are committed to road safety and the education of drivers.  GoSafe have for many years seen the benefit of dealing with a number of traffic offences by way of an educational course rather than prosecution.  The rationale is based on the notion that a course is more likely to achieve improved driving behaviour than a prosecution that would simply result in a fine and penalty points.

If you receive a speeding ticket within a certain speed limit threshold you may be given the opportunity of attending a Speed Awareness Course.  This is an alternative to receiving points on your licence and a £100 fine.

To attend a Speed Awareness Course costs £92 per course with effect from 1st September 2017 and they are offered to drivers or riders with the aim of changing attitudes to speeding and thereby driving behaviour.

  • Only one course can be undertaken in any three year period.  Once a course is successfully completed, the file on that incident is closed and no further action taken.  Further offending will be dealt with by prosecution.
  • A Speed Awareness Course can be attended in any force area where the National Offender Retraining Scheme has been adopted, irrespective of where the offence occurs. Details of the course providers can be found here.
  • There is no formal written test but drivers are expected to have a positive attitude and participate.  The Course is offered in the medium of Welsh and English and disabilities are catered for.
  • You must not have attended a similar course in the last 3 years.
  • Speed has to be within 10% plus 2 and 10% plus 9 of the speed limit.
  • You must admit the offence within 90 days of the date of the offence.
